History of the stock market documentary

I've recently acquired a job in the industry with no background knowledge of how the US economy came to be where it is today and no understanding of each market crash.

An informative documentary would be great, but a book would be very good as well! I am looking for info on how they determine how much money to print, who they lend to, and when they get paid back what they do with that money A History is quite good, but do take note that it's not without an agenda.

Its history is accurate, however if reading an the author's opinions on those facts bothers you, you might want to skip it. Personally, I'm a fan of the dialectic so I enjoy hearing differing points of view as I try to understand history.

Lords of Finance does an excellent job of detailing the world and regional economies on the heels of WW1 and how they led to the Great Depression.

This isn't limited to the US economy, but then again neither was the Depression. Also, of course, Reminiscences of a Stock Operatorif for no other reason than it's fun as hell.

Best Documentary/Book for the History of the Stock Market? : investing

The Ascent of Money: A Financial History of the World by Niall Ferguson is a good book. For documentaries, The Smartest Guys in the Room is pretty good. Too big to fail is also a great book to read about the recent meltdown.

There is also a movie by the same name if you prefer that. The Ascent of Money. The Smartest Guys in the Room Netflix direct link. Too Big to Fail -- this one is a tome, but good. This book on the same subject is pretty good, too: The Big Short by Michael Lewis. The last book talks mostly about the US although the lessons from behavioral finance applies anywhere. The first two books cover crises in the US and internationally.

I found this book at a supermarket bin for 2 bucks a couple of years ago. It's actually quite well written and covers the concept of markets going all the history of the stock market documentary back through recorded history. Good coffee table book too.

A book on a hedge fund in the 90s that went bust through the use of heavy leverage. The Last Days of the Lehman Brothers is also a hybrid documentary-movie which is also worth watching - both for its entertainment and it informative value, although I would argue entertainment value triumphs over valuable information here. Some people suggested reading books by Niall Ferguson. I would generally history of the stock market documentary against reading his books unless you know enough yourself; the thesis of his books is not always too clear.

I don't know how good his documentaries are, but I'm watching it as we speak. For benefits of the stock market crash 1929 good history on thought on finance over the past century, read The Myth of the Rational Market by Fox. I personally think you can't really go wrong with this one.

Clear writing, a lot sources in case you want to delve deeper into a certain topic in the book, and most importantly the book delivers on its thesis. If you're looking for a broad historical overview of the US economy over the last century I'd recommend this course: History of the U.

Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds by Charles Mackay is also an oldie but a goodie.

I really like The Number: How the Drive for Quarterly Earnings Corrupted Wall Street and Corporate America.

It's not a comprehensive history but a good deal about the transition to where we are today. Pretty much explains the role of the SEC, accountants, CEOs, and investors during the big bull market.
