WAQAR LILLAH Aug 3rd, ISLAMABAD. The government is likely to windup Benazir Employees Stock Option Scheme Besos , which offers a 12 percent share in public sector enterprises to their employees within nine to 12 months.

Sources inside the Privatisation Commission told Business Recorder the newly-elected government was considering the programme as a burden on the national exchequer as 12 percent government shares worth around Rs billion had been distributed free of cost among the employees of 80 public sector enterprises.

The government directed the PC to initiate a study of the programme to enable it to take final decision on whether to continue or suspend Besos, adding the programme had been on hold since last year, the sources maintained.

Study of the programme was underway and it was expected that the government would prefer to either rollback Besos or restructure it, sources added. The government may also review the proposed amendments of the previous government, if it wants to restructure Besos, including a condition that requires a minimum of five years of service in a public sector enterprise for a person to be eligible to avail this scheme.
